A moving checklist for the first weeks
A moving checklist is useful when it tells you what has to work on the first night and what can wait until you have slept in the place. Gift Potluck's moving tool is that list for a first apartment, a dorm, a new baby, or a new pet. It is not a quote from a moving company and it does not guess your box count. This guide is how to use the list without buying the entire internet in a weekend.
Name the move before you shop
A first apartment needs cleaning supplies, a shower curtain, and a way to make dinner. A dorm needs the subset your residence allows, which is often less than a retailer bundle. A new baby needs a household that can feed and change and sleep, not a themed nursery. A new pet needs food, water, a door that closes, and a plan for the first night of noise. Pick one list. Mixing them produces a cart full of objects for a life you are not moving into.
Open the moving tool and choose that list. If you have roommates, send the link the same day. The failure mode of move-in week is two people buying lamps and nobody buying a plunger. A shared check is the whole point.
Night one is a short list
On the night you get the keys, you need sleep, a bathroom, a charged phone, and breakfast. That means bedding or a clearly claimed air mattress, a towel, soap, a toothbrush, toilet paper, a charger, and one way to eat. It does not mean art, a full spice rack, or the good knives. Put those on the first-month side of the list and leave them there until the bed is made.
If you are moving cities, pack the night-one bag in your own car or your own suitcase, not in the box that says kitchen. The box will arrive later than you think, or it will arrive under three other boxes. The bag will not.
- Bed or an agreed place to sleep, plus a pillow you like enough to use.
- Towel, soap, toilet paper, and a shower curtain if the place does not have a door that contains water.
- Phone charger, medications you actually take, and a change of clothes.
- One pan or a plan to eat out, plus a cup. The rest of the kitchen can be a project.
- Basic tools: a screwdriver that fits the bed frame, tape, and a box cutter you will not lose in a couch.
The first month is when duplicates happen
After night one, walk the place with the checklist instead of a mood. Which lights are missing. Which window has no curtain. Whether you own a trash can. Roommates should claim rows. 'I'll do bathroom, you do kitchen' only works if the rows are checked where the other person can see them.
Buy the thing the second time you miss it, not the first time you imagine it. A dish rack is obvious. A third throw pillow is not. The same patience applies to a dorm: the hall may already own an iron, a vacuum, or a microwave. Ask before you spend the book money.
Tape, boxes, and the one product we show
The moving shelf has one product photo we are willing to stand behind: Scotch heavy duty packing tape. Tape is the supply that fails in the middle of a Saturday. Boxes, furniture sliders, bubble wrap, and labels are quick searches under that card because we are not going to invent a hardware catalog. Open them, read the size, and buy the amount you can carry. A 40-pack of boxes is a storage problem if you are moving a studio.
If you are also packing a trip out of the new place, the packing list is a different tool. Packing cubes and a luggage scale live on that shelf. Do not confuse move-in with a vacation. One is the rooms. The other is the bag.

Baby and pet lists have a boundary
The baby list is household setup: a place for diapers, a place to wash, a place to sleep that you have chosen with your clinician, not with a shopping site. Gift Potluck will not tell you which sleep position is safe. If family wants to buy gear, a small registry is a kinder way to collect it than a group chat of links. The registry guide is written for that guest list.
The pet list is food, water, a carrier, and a door. It is not a diagnosis. If the animal is new to you, the first appointment is with a vet, and the checklist does not replace it. Buy the carrier before the day you need the carrier. That is the entire wisdom of that row.
Money and other people's houses
If friends are chipping in on a couch or a crib, use a group gift pool with one organizer and a due date. Do not let five people buy five versions of the same object because nobody claimed the row. The moving list and the pool solve different problems. The list prevents duplicates. The pool collects money. Use the one you mean.
When the first month is over, stop shopping from the list. A home is not finished by a checklist. It is finished when you can find a spoon in the dark. Anything still unchecked is either a real gap or a wish. Leave the wishes for later.

Questions people actually ask
- Does this count how many boxes I need?
- No. It lists what has to show up. Box counts depend on how much you own, which the page cannot see.
- Can two roommates use it?
- Yes. Share the link or the signed-in plan. A check should be visible to both of you.
- What belongs on night one?
- Somewhere to sleep, a towel, a toothbrush, a phone charger, and a way to eat breakfast. Everything else can be a second trip.
- Is the pet list complete care?
- No. It is setup: food, bowls, a carrier, a place to sleep. Vaccines and diet changes belong to a vet.
- Is the baby list a nursery plan?
- It is household setup, not medical advice. Safe sleep and feeding decisions stay with the baby's clinician.
- What if the dorm forbids some items?
- The residence rules win. Uncheck anything your hall does not allow before you buy it.
- Why is packing tape the product on the shelf?
- It is the moving product we have a real photo for. Other supplies are quick searches so we are not inventing a catalog.
- Should I buy everything in the first week?
- No. The list is there so you can see what is missing, not so you can fill a cart. Wait on anything you have not needed twice.
